Restaurants

Following is a sample of restaurants available, although we endeavour to keep this information updated, inevitably restaurants will close, change hands and new ones open up. There really is too much choice to list here. Restaurants and bars appear everywhere, you can eat Spanish, English, French, Belgium, Mediterranean, Italian, Greek, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Russian, Scandinavian, North African, in fact any style that you can imagine.

Orba has a number of reasonably priced restaurants and there are also some good restaurants in the neighbouring area of Orbeta, which is a 15 minute walk from the villa. We have listed the telephone numbers where we know them! It is not always necessary to book, but advisable just to be sure of a table.

As well as 'a la carte', most restaurants will serve a simple, value for money ‘Menu del Dia’. The price varies from between €9 and €13 a head for a three course meal including half a bottle of wine.

The nearest restaurant is a short stroll away, by the sports hall.

Restaurant Piscina (96 558 3372) – award winning, Italian style, log fueled ovens, specialising in pizza’s, a huge choice, (even a chocolate one), they also have an extensive menu thats includes pasta's and steaks, wine €4 a bottle, take aways/local deliveries available.

In the centre of the village (5 to 10 minute walk) the main restaurants are:-

Restaurant Awraba (96 558 3866) - currently closed.

Restaurant Placa (96 558 3536) - Spanish owned, Spanish style, very popular, Menu del Dia, inc wine, and Tapas, €9.

The restaurant/bar/hotel Placa (Tapas available) is also a good place for a mid-morning coffee and brandy, sitting outside in the village plaza watching the world go by. There are also a number of other bars that cater for this activity, all have tables in the roadways.

Local Spanish restaurants/bars - lots to choose from, the ones that we have tried all serve freshly cooked meals at excellent prices.

Al Carrer (96 558 3071) - Calle Mayor, Spanish style, (inc Tapas), pavement tables all day.

Bar Escales - Across the square from restaurant Placa, Spanish cafe style, (inc Tapas), Menu del Dia €9, pavement tables all day.

Bar Pasaje - currently closed

Bar CalXon - between the John Deere garage and the traffic lights, Spanish, no menu, but they speak good English, Menu del Dia €7.50 including wine and coffee, excellent freshly cooked food for you.

Les Arcades (96 508 8445) - Calle Sendra, just off the main square. Another Spanish owned restaurant with a very good Menu del dia €10, more pavement tables.

Ca Pep - Calle Mayor, Spanish owned similar to Bar Placa. This resturant has a very large stage area and often hosts music eveings.

Citrus Bar - opposite the Mas y Mas supermarket, English, simple bar meals, outside terraces, quiz and live music evenings. Very popular for a mid-morning coffee on the terrace, or in the garden.

Mumbo Cafe(96 558 3433) - Next to Al Carrer, Cafe style, Full English breakfast, bocadillos (sandwiches, rolls), burgers, pavement tables.

Orbeta (approx 15 mins walk from the villa), also has some good restaurants.

Venta del VI (96 558 3443) - this restaurant serves a Menu del Dia for between €10 and €15. There is also a reasonably priced a la carte menu. The owners speak very little English, so this is a great place to practice your Spanish.

Forn Vell - in complete contrast, this restaurant is run by an English family, and the food is mostly traditional English fayre and good value for money. They have regular theme events, such as traditional Sunday roast, Fish and Chips on Friday, ‘Full Monty’ all day breakfasts as spare rib nights. Children's meals are available at around €4. Forn Vell was converted from an old ceramic oven, the curved remains of which are still in evidence

Cal Morell (96 558 4000) - this restaurant is around 75 meters up the hill from the Forn Vell, the food here is also very good, but a bit more expensive than the other restaurants mentioned.

Slightly further away

Detailed below are a number of other restaurants, where you will need to drive. On the outskirts of the village:

New Indian Gate (96 558 4399) - Indian, by the petrol station, 3 course menus with wine from €9.

El Nou Portet (96 640 5360) - Predominately Mediterranean style, 3 course menus from €12.

In the surrounding villages

There are numerous restaurants in the surrounding villages of Alcalali, Parcent, Jalon, Tormos, Murla, Benidoleig and although we haven’t sampled them all, the experiences at those we have been to have always been good. The restaurants outside of Orba tend to be a bit more expensive, but nevertheless, still very good value for money.

L’Era (96 640 5298) - in the village of Parcent is ‘the’ place to go for Paella, booking is essential as this restaurant gets very busy, and rightly so. Terraces for outside dining, good Jalon valley and mountain views. This restaurant only has Paellas on the menu, but lots of variety, meat, fish, mixed, vegetable, etc. All menus have a huge salad to start, and a large plate of fresh fruit to finish. If your table is near the kitchen, you can watch the chefs, through the flames.

Merendero (La Piscina) (96 640 5126) - just outside Parcent on the Col de Rates/Tarbena road. Best described as a Spanish kitchen. Only open lunch times, noon to 16:00, very popular, always busy, excellent choice of meats, fishes, paellas, pastas, all started off by a help yourself buffet salad, good range of sweets. Vino included, €12. Terraces or inside tables, Piscina (swimming pool) is now a huge lilly pond.

Monroes (96 576 1731) - near Pedreguer caters for English meals, a full carvery every lunchtime and evening, as well an extensive 'a la carte' menu. A good children's menu and children's cocktails are available. A bar meal/cafe area. They also have dancing and music nights. Monday pie nights, Friday fish lunches.

Pepe's (96 648 2456) and CastleVi (96 648 2481) - in Alcalali, both have similar menus, both serve excellent food, and are very popular.

All costal towns have a massive range of restaurants, the best fish restaurants are in the port areas at Calpe, Javea and Denia. In the early evening, at any of the ports, you can watch the fishing boats arrive, and sell their catch.

If Chinese is your choice, try one of the many Wok Buffet restaurants. These restauants offer an all you can eat deal between 12:00 and 24:00 for €10, buffet style service as well as your choice of fresh food cooked by wok chefs in front of you. House wine, how about an agreeable Rioja for €6.95.
